The Online Art Market

In a BBC article last month, Alex Hudson reports “the art industry is one of the last creative industries to make the digital move but, with more people buying art online without ever seeing it in real life, it could be that times are already changing”. He goes on to say the art industry in the UK is valued at around £40 billion with the online component growing by 20% a year. According to Rebecca Wilson, a director of the Saatchi Gallery, the Gallery sells more art in a month through its online gallery than most physical galleries do in a year. However, the report doesn’t make it clear whether this is by quantity or value. Nevertheless, if the art industry goes the way of the retail industry, online sales are bound to play a significant role in the marketplace in the very near future.
